ABOUT SANDTON

Sandton is the most exclusive area of Johannesburg.  Over the last 30 years Sandton has been transformed from a farming area to ‘Africa’s richest square mile’.  Sandton is home to 300 000 residents and 10 000 businesses.

Sandton is part of Greater Johannesburg and is some 20km from central Johannesburg and 30km from Oliver Tambo, Johannesburg’s International airport.  Lanseria airport, the busiest airport in the Southern hemisphere, is just 30km away.  Sandton is a hub for the Gautrain fast transit train, so a trouble free and fast trip from Oliver Tambo Airport takes just 15 minutes. A trip to Johannesburg is only 8 minutes, while Pretoria is 34 minutes away.

Sandton is also a 30 minute drive from Soccer City and Ellis Park, two stadiums which hosted matches for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Sandton’s skyline is now a mass of skyscrapers and more gracious large offices and office parks, surrounded by well treed residential suburbs and several parks.  At the centre are Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, two of the most prestigious and sophisticated shopping complexes in Africa. The two centres are linked by skywalk. Between them they offer some 300 shops and 60 restaurants.

The Sandton Convention Centre, also linked to Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, has over 22 000 m² of convention, exhibition and special event space. The Pavilion can seat 4 500 patrons. The Ballroom can seat 2 000 banquet guests and the 13 other meeting rooms can accommodate up to 350 delegates

There are several other large shopping and entertainment centres in the Sandton area, including Village Walk, Morningside, Morning View, Benmore Gardens, Montecasino, Rivonia, Rosebank and Sunninghill. And there are art galleries, cinemas, casinos, excellent golf courses, parks and other entertainment opportunities.

Sandton is home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and is a major financial centre.  Nedbank, Investec Bank and Rand Merchant Bank have their headquarters here and many foreign banks have representative offices in the area.  Many other companies have moved head offices from central Johannesburg to the Sandton area.

The best dining experiences in South Africa can be found in Sandton, with specialities from all over the world.  There are excellent hospitals in the Sandton Area, including Morningside Clinic, Sunninghill Clinic and Sandton Medi-Clinic.  There are also many health spas, gymnasiums, and some17 golf courses within easy reach.

Sandton has a pleasant, temperate climate and has summer rainfall (October to April).  Winters can be chilly at night although the days are almost always warm to hot.
